Legal
Copyright ©
Copyright is an exclusive legal right to use a material. the reason copyright exists is to protect an authors work, copyright means that the author created cannot be used or published by others without having the consent of the original author that has copyright it can even last from 50-100 years after death. things that are usually copyrighted are books, poems, plays, songs, films, art, shows, websites and other things. copyright protection is usually automatic which means whenever you publish something online it is automatically under copyright which is lucky because you can just copy and past most information. if something is copyrighted it usually has a line of information found such as Copyright © 2000-2015 (your name or company name here) e.g. © 2016 Pokemon/Nintendo. if you don't give the credit like it is deserved then you can be taken to court for it so make sure to always to ask to use something that isn't yours.
Trademark
a trademark are symbols/ words/ sign which have been legally registered and established to represent a certain company or product. A trademark is usually shown by a symbol such as ™, ℠ or ®.
™ is used for trademarks that are unregistered and is used on physical objects that have a branding
℠ is pretty much the same as ™ but is instead a unregistered service mark which means it is used for services instead
® is used when a trade mark has actually been registered
a trademark is normally a name words, logo, image, sign, names aswell a s a combination of all of these plus more to it. a trademark is there to protect the ownsers ideas/logo from being stolen/imitated by competition using your own trademark to get customers since it could desrot your business and also stop customers from being decepted.

Patent
when you have a invention pantented it means that you have the sole right stop all others from making, using or selling an invention without your permission. after a certain amount of time if something isn't renewed it can be used by others for commercial use
Registered Designs
a registered design is a design that has been registered. once a design has been registered you will be able to protect the external appearance of a product.
Example
Example
Ethical
Violence
the ethical problem of violence and gore in games is that people believe that games like GTA V cause people to become more violent in real life and actually hurt people in real life.
Example
there have been cases when people believed that to have happen such as a teenager called Devin Moore, who was a big fan of GTA went on a killing spree in 2003
Rating
Age rating systems such as PEGI (Pan-European Game Information) are used to help parents make decisions on what video games to buy their children. It was first established in 2003 and now widely used throughout the entirety of Europe. PEGI and other game rating systems help the parent of young children get the right games for there children e.g. a 10 year old getting GTA V.
Example
Education
in my opinion video games are a grey line in education, some games can teach us positive messages while others can tell us very negative messages. educational video games are different from the normal type of game since they have a purpose other that jsut entertaining us such as teaching us a lesson which could be like a subject at school or could be a moral lesson. a educational game will have all the characteristics of a normal video game but will have educational intentions.

Example
In the game Undertale depending on how you play you will see different routes and playing the game will have different messages e.g. you don't have to kill anything and can be a positive person with friends or you may kill someone and you will learn that your actions have outcomes. such as with the character sans, you could end up killing his brother and he will spite you or if you kill everyone you will have to fight him and he is the most powerful character which will teach you that cheating is wrong as well as just because you can do something doesn't mean that you should do it.

being friends with Sans
if you kill everyone and make him a enemy
first meeting sans, fighting/him killing you, you killing him.
Stereotyping
the problem with stereotyping in video games is that they are usually negative examples such as a black man is usually shown as a very aggressive person or show them to be in gangs or just like with the Italian mafia showing them can put Italians in a bad light since it is a negative stereotype. others would be that games would put a image into your head of what a criminal would look like or that woman are just sex objects.

Example
In Street Fighter every fighter from each country is a different stereotype, although they aren't the most negative stereotype they still put how people see them into perspective

Addiction
Addiction can happen when someone spends a abnormal amount of time playing a game, there's a difference between playing a game because it is fun and because you are addicted since you can hate the game but become addicted to that game. addiction is a huge problem because you lose a lot of real world time which can be used for more useful things such as increasing you knowledge or skills. A lot of people blame games for ruining there lives whereas other people feel the opposite and use games as a way to escape into a story and are thankful for them.

Example
in the E4 show Misfits there is a guy called Tim who was addicted to GTA and because of a supernatural storm he saw everything as if it was the game and treated the world like he was in a game of GTA, killing and stealing. this may be a reference to people who become addicted to violent games and become violent themselves.

Contractual
Employment
being employed into gaming businesses means that you would be trusted with secret information of the company such as new games that are coming out or other things

Example
a few years back just before the Wii was announced an employee of Nintendo took a selfie with it and uploaded it online and Nintendo sued him for everything he had for going against his contract and revealing company information.

Development
usually a publisher in the game industry will hire a developer to make a game for them, a development agreement is the terms that bind the publisher and developer. the terms will usually be how developer will get payed, how long the developer will have to make the game and how much of royalties (if any) will go to the developers. the warranty which involves the developers saying that they wont use anyone else code and the publishers saying they have the right to ask the developers to create this kind of game, also the ownership of the product in question, they need to know whether the developer or the publisher owns the game.
Example
License
when a publisher is making a game based on something else such as a comic, TV show, Cartoon, Anime or movie e.g. The Simpsons game, Spiderman, Naruto Ninja Storm etc... the publisher and the owner of the original product needs to make a contract which says the terms of the license. The contract will say what part of the world the game will be allowed to be licenced in, usually the publisher will want the right to publish the game worldwide but the owner will want more money for that. they will also have to specify what console the games will be on such as it being on Xbox 360 and PS3 or it could go just to next gen and be on PS4 and Xbox One. also something else that needs to be licensed would be how long the contract would last, most would only run for no more than 5 years.

Example
NDA
NDA/Non-Disclosure Agreements, Disclosure Agreements and Confidentially Agreements are contracts that state that once a private secret has been disclosed it must be kept a secret by the other company e.g. a game being made for the PS4 even before the PS4 has been announced or someone working for Nintendo keeping the Wii U a secret. other things such as a plan to make a new game, a new technology or a business/ agreement that has not yet been publicly announced. Both parties agree to keep the secret and not reveal the information otherwise one party could take the other to court and sue the second party.

Example
Collaboration
collaboration projects are when two or more different companies come together to create a game that takes from both series like super smash bros series where it takes characters from a bunch of different Nintendo games and puts them together to duke it out. collaborations are good because you can take fans from all series that take place such as Pokemon, Metroid and Mario.

Example
Pokken is an example because its is a collaboration project between Pokemon and Tekken. basically its a game that is based off of Tekken while using characters from Pokemon, this opens a lot for Pokemon and was very different and brings in not just lovers of Pokemon but lovers of Tekken and fighting games
